William Grant Still was born May 11, 1895 in Woodville, Mississippi and died December 3, 1978 in Los Angeles, California. He was one of America's first noted black classical composers. He grew up in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, where his widowed mother taught English in Little Rock high schools. His father had been a music teacher at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. He studied music at Wilberforce University in Ohio; Oberlin College and the New England Conservatory of Music. He received honorary degrees from the University of Arkansas, Howard University, the University of Southern California at Pepperdine, Wilberforce University, Oberlin College, the New England Conservatory of Music and Bates College.
